  A few years ago we wanted to get rid of an old bicycle which was serviceable apart from the need to replace a few bit and bobs. We put a card in the local shop and left it outside our front door in the hope that someone in need would help themselves to it and use it.
  
  After a couple of weeks our neighbour knocked on our door one morning and said: 'Last night a couple of the young scrotes from Elvington nicked that old bike and made off down the road with it. I chased them and retrieved it, and gave them a good piece of my mind.'
  
  So it doesn't always go according to plan, Bob.
