08:0489948The Manager said that Tuesday (25th.) is the date the Administrators will decide - she said it only happened last Thursday, so that will be a very quick decision if it is made on Tuesday.

20:4090130Dammit. Another resource goes. I will have to go to Canterbury for art stuff. I can't believe there isn't a space for this shop in Dover. Smiths is rubbish!!

21:3990134hasn't closed yet, if everything has to go why have the prices not dropped?
see too many "closing down sales" to take them seriously.
i remember "savers" being on their uppers about this time last year, they were renegotiating rents with their landlords.

21:4190136I've written a letter for the administrators and gave it to the Manager today.
It might, just might make a difference coming from the Channel Chamber's Dover Business Support and Work Placement Manager, we'll see.
You have to try don't you ?

08:5490163Well done Roger with that effort. It will be a great shame to lose this shop. Its window display itself was a great source of information. I never knew there were so many books about Dover until that shop opened.

21:2890264My wife and her sister, did some craft demonstrations in the shop on a couple of Saturdays which went down well.

22:2790271I had a chat with one of the ladies in there the other day and she said it's horrible not knowing what will happen to them. I feel so sorry for the staff who are always so bright and helpful. Good luck to them all.

17:5391984On the news WHSmith has taken on 22 of the shops.Paid £1million.
On BBC Kent webpage gives a list but Dover not on the list. Several of the shops they have purchased they also have a WHSmith in that town.
As on earlier items on this thread this retailer gives such a wide selection and the staff at Dover shop are superb examples of good customer service

19:1091995You beat me to it Pat - well done.
If W.H. Smith has bought them out, they'll not need two shops in Dover - I wonder how it will develop.

19:5192003Yes Roger but Dover is not on the list of shops purchased by WHSmith so Dover shop still looking for a buyer.
Like you where WHSmith already have a shop and have now purchased another in the same town will be interesting to see what eventually happens, although I think , certainly in Dover, British Bookshops have always had a much wider choice than at WHSmith

20:4292097Smiths is rubbish - I like British Bookshops for their art stuff, good choice and good prices.

20:5292098WHSmiths is nowhere near as good. It is a real shame as they always had a good range.
Saying that WHSmiths will always have a fond place in my heart. I was a Saturday boy there for a good few years (the old shop on the corner).

21:0792102i never think of smiths as a book shop, much more a shop that sells books amongst other things.
their board must think the same, otherwise they would not be snapping up a rival to operate in opposition to them.

22:3292111Smiths seems to have lost their identity, our one is gloomy with a messy layout and a cramped feeling . I much prefer Sussex clean, bright and well laid out.

I try to be neutral and polite but it is hard and getting even more difficult at times.

22:3892113I agree -Smiths is something and nothing, jack of all trades etc, not good at anything.
