Six people are in Police custody:two cottage-residents and four suspected exponents of (over) free-enterprise.
(again) A lawful resident who discharged a fire-arm in the general direction of unknown breakers-in, injuring two, and his wife have been arrested, along with the four suspected entrepreneurs...

The burglars got what they deserved and the home owners should not be prosecuted. Having been burgled previously and faced with four intruders the home owner did what anyone should do to defend himself and themselves and their family - good for them.
Shame on the police for arresting them.
There should always be a presumption of innocence for anyone defending their home against intruders, even if the intruder is killed, and they should only be prosecuted if it can be shown that they were in some way pre-meditating or planning murder or were reckless in attacking innocent people.

been a massive increase in rural crime over the past decade with criminals realising the easy pickings in farm outbuildings and the likelihood of being caught as remote.
has to get worse as police cuts take effect.

There is not much choice for those living down picturesque country lanes except to protect themselves however they can, it takes the police too long to arrive when there is a problem. I wish the couple well and hope they are soon bailed, no pity for the burglars at all it serves them right.

It certainly serves burglars right and people defending their property must have some rights to protect themselves.

While I sympathise with victims of crime, beware condoning vigilante action too. Someone Stealing your property doesn't give yo the right to seriously injure them and possibly take their life. We do live under the rule of law.

andrew its not a question of serious damage, its a case of protecting your property.a shot gun cartridge loaded with rock salt would hurt enough without doing damage.

I do wonder what the delay may be in designating one's domicile differently from a public place. A line is certainly crossed, no matter if criminal or guest, upon entering somebody's home.
Even those places designated "public houses" are allowed to regulate who comes and goes.
If only the onus was on the 'intruder' to explain their actions, but we soon come up against the usual problem;when it is 'lawful' for the law-abiding to utilise a weapon the criminal often ensures that theirs is bigger than yours.
If only it were possible to take a statement under oath from the property-occupier, as opposed to resorting to arrest?

I am all for protecting one's property and have no sympathy whatsoever for any criminal who gets injured breaking and entering or stealing - whether rural or in Town.
There used to be a saying about a man's home is his castle; this has been watered down over the years to mean that you can't even defend your own property/home, which in my view is wrong.
Burglars take knives and guns and they will use them if challenged, therefore what ever they are doing is always pre-meditated.

"A police spokeswoman said officers had been granted more time to question all six. She said: "Police investigating an incident in Melton have been granted a magistrates' court extension to question those arrested."

Anything more violent than a little light tazering must be condemned.

Indeed Andrew, if only there was a line, recognised in law, that separated public from private. So that the possession and use of 'weapons of defence' was lawful in the home.

"
Two men have been charged with burglary following a shooting at a farm in Leicestershire, police have said.
The pair, aged 27 and 33, have been remanded in custody and are due to appear at Loughborough Magistrates' Court tomorrow.
The arrests followed an attempted break-in by four men at an isolated farm in Welby, near Melton Mowbray, on Sunday.
The farm's owners Andy Ferrie, 35, and his wife Tracey, 43, were arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm after two men were allegedly shot at.
Mr Ferrie called police early on Sunday morning to tell them he had picked up his legally-owned shotgun after being disturbed by the intruders and fired at them.
He and his wife have been released on bail.
Two other men, aged 31 and 33, arrested on suspicion of aggravated burglary, have been bailed pending further enquiries.
Police were granted extra time to question the suspects and had until the early hours of Wednesday morning to bail or charge any of the six."

The farmer should be charged with failing to shoot an intruder, just to set an example

all seems very heavy handed towards the couple, as mentioned earlier in the thread a sworn statement from each would have been sufficient.

The guy who was shot had his face covered so he couldn't recognised and was out of prison on licence. Previous record for burglary and violence.
A Tazer Andrew ? I don't think so.
