one other little snag, that wreak full of unexploded ammo just of sheerness, have been told that its voilatile and go up at any moment.so with extra shipping movements it could blow,if so it could cause lots of damge to the area.

We should expand Manston and build a better road and rail infrastructure system, connecting to the M2/A2 motorway.
A lot less people and wildlife to upset there too and a huge boost to East Kent's (and of course Dover's) regeneration and tourism.

Manston will never get off the ground as a commercial airport until night flights are allowed.
It is no good going to Edinburgh etc. if you cannot fly before mid morning & return the same day.
Local people along the coast will also have to accept more traffic affecting time in their gardens.

http://www.dft.gov.uk/mca/mcga07-home/emergencyresponse/mcga-receiverofwreck/mcga-ssrichardmontgomery.htm
There is a lot of rumour going round about the SS Richard Montgomery which sunk about 60 years ago off Southend loaded with explosives. Because My hobby has me in full view of the wreck every weekend I have taken an interest in her. If you read the above reports from the MCA (coastguard) you will get the true picture of how dangerous or not the threat of explosion is.
I am totally against an airport anywhere near this area but not because of the wreck. I fear for the wildlife and I fear for the residents of the Isle of Sheppey. This is a beautiful area and a peaceful one, I hate the thought of planes polluting the area.
I don't for one minute think this will ever happen anyway.
There's always a little truth behind every "Just kidding", a little emotion behind every "I don't care" and a little pain behind every "I'm ok".

there lies the rub, residents will vigorously oppose plans for night flights from manston.
incidentally i heard that there will be some during the olympic games when local airports will be handling a lot of extra flights.

Another alternative to the Boris plan would be for RAF Northolt to become part of Heathrow - it only needs minor work on the runway to realign it, it is roughly the same distance form the entrance to Heathrow as Terminal 5 is so logistically it could certainly work. If this was done as part of Crossrail/HS2 then it could easily be connected up to a new upgraded Heathrow interchange.

Strategically correct for transport links Ross but not necessarily correct for Northolt's other strategic activities!!

Ah Paul - but Northolt is hardly used by the RAF these days and once we bring troops back from their foreign adventures it will have virtually no military usage

Military, Royal & political Ross. It is nicely placed to avoid prying eyes & a quick getaway.

True Paul, but to be honest these are minor considerations when the greater good of the majority is being considered

Both Boris Island and HS2 have `enormous ` opportunity costs implications and damage to our `small`island.
Need to rethink improving what we have...both air and land.
Boris Island and HS2 may be dynamic headlines but...................

True Reg
There are a number of sensible and more viable alternatives to Boris Island and there are better routes and methods for creating HS2 - in both cases at significantly lower cost in all senses of the word

governments like to leave a legacy even if it turns out to be a white elephant, they like to be remembered for something.
the millenium dome is a prime example.
