17:4928891The Balmoral is now back in Dover and luckily my parents managed to avoid the virus. Sadly the cruise was cut short by a day as they were told they were not allowed to dock in Guernsey carrying the infection. This means that many of the passengers have had to be accommodated at The Ramada for an extra night. Most had travel arrangements to take them home set for tomorrow. A coach trip tour to a stately home in Mull, all paid for in advance, was cancelled as they were not allowed on site for fear of infection.
This one woman who refused to stay in her cabin despite doctor's orders and then threw up in the corridor has cost the company many tens of thousands and wrecked the holidays of many passengers. Refunds will now have to be issued for the missing days and cancelled trips.
My father estimated the number infected was nearer 200 than the official figure of around half that. However, he had praise for the Phillipino crew who worked tirelessly installing sanitisers and constantly cleaning.
Could legal action proceed against her do we think?

18:5028892still not much of a holiday though thil, your parents must have been conscious of catching the bug at any time.
i doubt if legal action is a possibility, people go out all the time when they are carrying an infection or virus.

07:1528904The Balmoral arriving back yesterday. Good to hear your parents didnt catch the Norovirus Phil. I believe, according to a report I heard, that all passengers are getting a full refund. Not sure just how accurate that report was... but anyone aboard that 'vomit comet' should certainly be refunded. The ship has had previous problems of similar nature, as reported before. My neighbour downstairs lived through the same thing last year.. it looks a little too easy to put all the blame on a passenger and I suggest there may have been PR spin doctors at work here

09:3828916It wasn't the Balmoral we went on our Round Britain cruise with, but the Black Watch.
I would like to add that the crew were very good on cleanliness (and everything else, including great service) as was the Norwegian Jewel last year to the Baltic - always cleaning rails, and doors, handles etc. etc.
I agree with the person who said she shouldn't have been allowed on board, maybe this will make them (Fred Olsen) think differently next time a passenger wants to come on board with an illness like this one.

09:5828918Well my parents were not offered a full refund, just for the cancelled trips and for the missing day. And no, I don't think the virus being carried by a single passenger is spin as the Captain mentioned this is what happened on a number of occasions. He was extremely apologetic and stated (I paraphrase) 'If one person won't stay in their cabin as instructed then there is nothing I can do'. I don't see any reason to invoke conspiracy theories at this stage.

Sailed with Fred Olsen many times. Never had a problem. However. disturbing that many passengers on entering the ship and the dining room refuse to use the antiseptic hand foam, similar to that used in hospitals. Perhaps they think they are incapable of carrying germs that we plebs have.

The Boudicca had to have a deep clean and extended stay on saturday because of Nora virus. Its becoming increasingly common on ships coming into Dover.

More accurate to say it's increasingly common on ships sailing out of Dover, it's usually brought on board by ignorant passengers who think hygiene measures only apply to others, as Howard mentions above.

No, I'm right on ships coming in to dover, as evidenced by the number of deep cleans carried out before the new passengers are allowed to join and the briefings given to cruise terminal staff.
