I was up bright (well still dark actually!) and early to cover the launch at Lydden Hill
Here are a few of mine will hopefully be a couple in the national press just waiting to hear.

Amazing shots, especially the one of the out-of-control BBQ.

What a great shame that the organisers could not have been more proactive with their publicity, or that the local media could not have tipped people off in last night's bulletins. Why is that as far as Dover is concerned anything that happens that might actually interest local people, as well as attract some visitors to the town, is shrouded in secrecy! Another own goal....

Unfortunately such events can only take place when wind and weather conditions are perfect. Clear skies coupled with a light NW breeze are incredibly rare in Dover and are unstable conditions. Short notice is a hallmark of all ballooning events and I am glad I was tuned in here when I saw the advance notice. Well done guys. How proactive can you be with less than 24 hours notice?

My kids were fasinated by the balloons , i believe they crossed the channel in about four hours .

great pictures from our resident pro matt bristow.
we must count ourselves lucky that roger tipped us the wink.
kevin is right though about the lack of publicity for events, not in this case though.

What fantastic shots Matt - wonderful stuff. I didn't know in advance but saw them taking off from my coach on the A2 this morning just after 7am. I took some pics with my blackberry but they didn't come out well from a moving vehicle with slightly wet windscreen

There's always a little truth behind every "Just kidding", a little emotion behind every "I don't care" and a little pain behind every "I'm ok".

Great shots Matt - my problem was not knowing where to go - I did think of heading Lydden way but though the Drop Redoubt into the sun would make some interesting silhouttes :)
Been nice knowing you :)

Best place would have been near the S Foreland lighthouse. Or in the Meridian helicopter of course! Doh!

I fully appreciate that ballooning is always subject to weather conditions. However, the media were clearly aware that all was set fair for the day otherwise how would they have been able to cover the event? Surely, our "local" media could have been a bit more saavy and informed people it was taking place. Sorry, I forgot, they are too busy giving front page coverage of the views of a "celebrity" visiting a pub!

The Mercury posted it to their website and Facebook late on Wednesday so I assume they only found out then
I am sure with the Web as good as it is today, it would have been difficult to spread the word though. I barely saw a handfull of people out and about :(
Been nice knowing you :)

Before I joined this wonderful forum I usually heard about events after they happened, the local newspapers love telling us about events AFTER they have happened.

Paul, that photo #28 with the shadows on the sea is stunning, good move going where you did.

The decision to go ahead was not taken until Weds afternoon, as I understand it. That led to a mad scramble by balloonists to get to Lydden for the start. Such weather is rare in Dover.

jan
we have spies everywhere, hence the best way of knowing what is going on is to log on here.
last summer there was an accident that required an air ambulance, two of our members were there to photograph the crash scene and the arrival in pencester gardens of the helicopter.
thankfully the injuries were not as serious as first thought.
as an addendum where else could we see photos of the quality that matt has supplied?
