19:5291719It's the age old problem...we want tougher sentences but are not prepared to pay for extra prisons.
We want, wherever possible to rehabilitate them but many ex offenders become unemployable after prison.
We want to reduce costs by putting them in hostels, halfway houses etc so long as it's NIMBY.
I don't have the answers but first society must stop believing the scare mongering in the tabloid press.Things were far worse in the good old days but not widely publised on TV and talk shows. We have higher detection rates now with less corruption..ie would Jack the Ripper be apprehended today if he committed the same crimes..yes cos of DNA and modern policing, cctv;s etc.

20:0291722Howard: either return to prison if on license (the clue is in the words) or be arrested for the crime. Not returned to prison if they have finished their sentence.
Marek - what you say is so accurate. And one thing to remember is that most of us are or know a crim! Have you been less than truthful with expenses? Driven too fast? Had a drink too many and got in to your car? Lost a business? Criminality is, as Marek implies, "bigged up" by the tabloids. I need hardly point out the tabloids relationship with the courts. Clearly, people who present a danger are in a different place, but we really should check our responses to the concept of criminality.

20:5991730with respect i think you are missing the main point bern.
4 out of 5 people in these hostels are considered dangerous by the probation service, we are not talking about white collar crime, t.v licence dodgers or shoplifters.
the 4 out of 5 have repeat convictions for sexual assault, rape, buggery, child molesting and a selection of violent crimes.
they are not people that have simply made a one off mistake.

Does any one else not find this scary!! REPEAT offenders they can only repeat their offence if they are out of prison in a bail hostel for instance. How many times does a REPEAT offender have to REPEAT before they lock them up for good?!?
I am even more concerned about this now, it is not just a case of what they did to be locked up and released to a bail hostel its how many times they repeated the action and were again released into a bail hostel.
It might be scaremongering but it has worked on me chaps, my family are too important to me.
