Just heard on BBC Kent that ASDA are no longer coming to Dover? After all the marquee in Pencester and all the hype, is this true?
Oh Boy!, That'll be the day.........

Just seen Sid and he told me the same. Sad and depressing news but no surprise given the economic situation and the opening of Morrisons.

Ok, three threads going on this one. I'll choose this for a question.
Here's a statement:-
An ASDA spokesperson said: "We are very disappointed but despite the best efforts of all concerned, we have had to end our involvement in the scheme. There were key areas that we could not agree on, such as design requirements and the operation of the shoppers' car park."
So why couldn't they agree?

There I told you so it is that planning dept again up at the D.D.C. All the time they have any power at all nothing and I say nothing WILL EVER GET DONE IN Dover. PLEASE DO NOT VOTE THEM IN AGAIN.

the planning dept are non political vic, they are employed officers.
It is a bit irritating when the forum is used as a barely concealed political platform...............................I mean it kindly

Yes but the cllrs let them get away with it,I have been and talked up at their planning meeting and the cllrs all ways go along with what the officers say,if they say no then no it is Howard,go up there see for yourself.
I know - the irritation with the local reps is almost tangible. It is outrageous that Dover is let down so obviously.

We have to move on now and get something better in than this hideous mammon-maw.
Their loss. Was always unlikely that they'd come after Morrison's opened.
Or maybe they are playing the long game and hoping to move into Whitfield? The councillor/officer who ever sanctioned that would be hounded out of the area.
I'm afraid this whole fiasco just confirms the worst fears about DDC's Economic Development know-how. Know-how not to.
Sweepstake on when development finally happens anyone? 2020 vision? Should have gone to SpecSavers. 2035? Maybe, if we're lucky.

Not surprised for the reasons Barry W cites.
Now let's move on, this is a real blow to the long term regeneration of the town, but one with the right leadership the town can bounce back and grow from. Sadly I have little faith in the current leadership up at Whitfield both in terms of the councillors and senior officers who have presided over the recent version of this long running tragedy.
Perhaps what the DTIZ needs is a redesign on a more people friendly basis. Keep the hotel, but redesign the rest of it based round smaller shop units, housing etc.

i cannot see the hotel people rushing into building anything.
the last thing they would want is their business surrounded by dereliction.

Ross good post,I think you are thinking along the same lines as me.
With yu Ross - I picture the inside of Whitfield Towers as being like a bad keystone cops movie. The key will be proper, real, intelligent, skilled and experienced leadership.

We are all on the same boat with this one.

Well why don't we all just pack up and leave, last one out turns the light off!!
Ok so Asda pulled out, I'm disappointed too but will continue to use the Folkestone and Canterbury stores. Let's show a bit of the British stiff upper lip - we lost the battle but we ain't lost the war - Dover will rise again, whoever runs the council.
For goodness sake stop this defeatist attitude

There's always a little truth behind every "Just kidding", a little emotion behind every "I don't care" and a little pain behind every "I'm ok".

It may also present an opportunity, after all Asda was never the perfect solution, just the only one on the table.
I can understand people wanting scapegoats and DDC officers and members are the obvious choice, but much of this scapegoating, and I point the finger directly at Vic, is down to ignorance of the way real life works in the big wide world.

It seems as if ASDA are not happy with DDC wording about them pulling out, wonder why, perhaps Gwyn and the Senior Labour Councillors who have a meeting with ASDA soon can find out the real truth.
If you knew what I know,we would both be in trouble!
