To add to what Paul wrote DDC (who have four apprentices, all supported by East Kent College on an accredited course) pay 1.5 times above the Government guidelines for Apprenticeships.

Yes the world does need welders but without skilled office workers the welders will not get paid.
There are different kinds of skills not just the manual ones that Vic seems to favour, anyone who does their job properly can be called skilled.

It appears that Vic is stuck in the 1970's.

Mining is safer today then it was 10years ago .But it is a real mans job.
The reason you didn't see one office worker whilst working hundreds of feet in the air Vic was because in the past cloud technology was unknown.
Who do you think files all the data that people upload to the cloud nowadays? What always puzzles me though, is how do aeroplanes avoid running into them!

As I said we need all trades office and welders etc. we are all parts of a wheel if one part stops working the wheel is unsafe.

They have to stop work sometimes Vic, if only to have their special atmospheric parties that makes the writer of this song guilty of some 'blue sky' thinking:
Do nothing and nothing happens.

The bottom line is that most 'office workers' can or will be replaced by algorithms or a guy on the end of the 'phone in India. With voice recognition software even the typist is about to go the way of the comptometer operator, another highly paid 'job for life' which disappeared in the seventies.
Even with robotics however most of us will still need a skilled worker to fix our plumbing, electrics or motor vehicle.

Hi Ken,
Hope your well(still waiting for the date for the coffee, lol)
You can, as an ex Councillor of many parties recognise that the councils are going through a rough time, so much so we will see DDC disappear in its present form very soon. Of course they will all fight there own corner, thus delaying the outcome, but it won't go away.
It is, as you say a little confusing taking on the apprentice if theres nothing at the end, and of course the employer only has to pay a pittance as well, its a real rip off.
But I hope all those that do these jobs at least get some skills from this.
On posts 25 etc I'v spoken with his fellow workers in Dover who said he would be happy to work unsafely, rest of workforce wouldn't thank fully at the moment there is more protection for workers, although with brexit this could change if workers rights are thrown out the window as presently being proposed.

I don't think anyone has proposed reducing workers rights as part of the brexit negotiations. In fact the Govt has said the exact opposite. Are you just making this up?

If the EU were responsible for worker's rights they didn't do a very good job with zero hour contracts here and nearly 50% youth unemployment in the southern countries. Individual Governments set the rules with the Blair/Brown set up bringing in the minimum wage and working tax credits. Having said all that I don't trust Cruella and her mates not to spring a nasty surprise or two that hurts working people but she would have done that inside or outside the EU.

That's as maybe, Howard, and I wouldn't expect anything else from the Tory's but no one has actually proposed reducing workers rights as part of Brexit.

Most of our 'rights' e.g. bank holidays, holiday pay - both introduced by Conservative Governments - not only predate EU but exceed their requirements.

Voted against bringing in the minimum wage and when in Government forced people to work for nothing until they were shamed into stopping it.

Just thought I would check it out a little
I should at first say I voted to remain, but accept the result and we need to move at the quickest possible pace to carry out the publics wishes.
That said we don't want to go back to the 1900's with the cap at the gate begging for a job.
And it's interesting that its being said now that if t may carries out her wishes on immigration we could end up with a shortfall of 60,000 workers, now ok some UK residents can take up the slack sadly many wont and that could be an issue in itself.
But don't just believe me Michael Farrelly Employment Lawyer had concerns states the conservatives have never hidden the fact they want to dilute workers rights.
Wanting to cap compensation on discrimination
wanting to do away with rights to only have to work a maximum of 48 hour week
Give employers the opportunity to not push through progressive working conditions for staff
in fact could encourage them to go back down the route of regressive working practices.
At the mo big companies have good on going parental leave, paternal/maternity leave
all could be wiped out under the repeal bill.
You have been warned.

Keith,
Truly surprised you are not also concerned Tories 'might' repeal ban on slavery + getting little kiddies to go up chimneys!
(Though personally I would certainly reduce the 'rights' of overpaid unionised muppets on Southern Rail go on strike over having sole responsibility to open doors.)

Congratulations to this apprentice at Buckland Hospital but why the silly new name for what sounds like that important member of staff that most of us know as a porter.
"Niall, 17, works at Buckland Hospital in Dover in the
manual handling team, which helps staff move patients safely."
