  " SIR - Some days ago during mild and sunny weather I noted the fact that the frogs had not made their usual spring appearance. Today, as a blizzard howls across the Pennines from Siberia and the pond is again under snow and ice, I ask myself how the frogs knew that winter was about to strike back in earnest.
