I'm still a bit fuzzy about the logic.

Interested to hear Alex's advice on iron railings. We were discussing how to deal with ours at Victoria Park only yesterday. It will be a project if and when the better weather comes.

DT, a painting and dec job requires a precise plan before commencing.
The person carrying out the job will want to make sure the customer is aware what needs doing, what materials are required and - more or less - how much material (cost-wise), and approximately how much time is needed.
If you have to repair cracks, holes, or do other preparatory work prior to painting, such as applying special coats (for example against damp stains), you''ll want to make sure the customer is aware.
And one paint has to dry before the next coat or type is is applied.
And usually, one coat is not enough, unless it's the same colour as the old one. And so on and so forth.
If in doubt, just ask a painter - without making known your intentions - to paint one door, or one wall somewhere.
If it comes out right, with a clean finish, and the price is right, you can casually mention that some more needs painting, perhaps a room, or all the doors, or whatever..

By the way, I was informed last year that gloss paints are no longer allowed to be sold, by EU decree.
Not sure whether it is so, but many wood paints nowadays are water-based, such as eggshell, so it probably is true.
Not too sure about metals though, which require different paints. That said, I have used water-based paint on outdoor metal long ago, and it came out alright. But it was not rust-prone metal, though.
Just applying hammerite on iron railings without a specific anti-rust paint beforehand is not advisable.

Alex, if I asked you to paint a door, you would not need to be an Hercule Poirot to realise that the whole place needs a re-dec!!
Seven years ago I put one coat of red oxide primer on new bare metal railings at the back of Blakes, followed by one coat of black hammerite smooth and they are still in reasonable nick, as far as I know.

Nope, Peter, but at least, if you were not satisfied with the one door, you would have no obligation to keep the painter and decorator on, not having made any further contract.
Once you have trust in the worker, then you can make further arrangements.

By the way, I've been trying to change my occupation, and wanted to open a farm-estate of sorts, but there is no money around to start up, and Chancellor Osborne ain't goin' to lend me any from the Treasury either!
