Does anyone watch the popular comedy cartoon South Park? In case you don't, very briefly it's an adult-themed comedy show with a cast of characters that are generally rude, crude and plain silly and the makers of South Park (Matt Stone and Terry Parker) tend to attack a lot of aspects of popular culture and topical issues. The show has a strong parody-led focus, and nothing is off limits to the writers.
For the 200th episode of South Park the show featured the prophet Mohammed in a comedic sense. South Park has always had a regular Jesus character who has always been very funny (if anyone remembers the Xmas special where Christ had a fight with Santa Clause then you'll know what I mean) and they've also had daft cartoon characters of God and the Devil. But anyway, the Mohammed character has led (rather predictably I guess) to death threats being made against the creators by an Islamic group.
I've read online that the New York Times has reported that the FBI are not dong much about this threat but South Park fans are. On 20th May fans are holding a huge event called "Everybody Draw Mohammed Day". I'm wondering if Islam will be issuing death threats to every single participant of this event?
Surely not - they say this is the "religion of peace" so surely a bit of harmless parody - which Christians, Catholics, Jews, et al seem relatively cool about in popular culture, should result in death threats?
Love South Park. Let's get drawing................

You have to wonder about any group that is so insecure in their dogma that they can not allow for any criticism or parody.
Politics, it seems to me, for years, or all too long, has been concerned with right or left instead of right or wrong.

For a minute there I was fully expecting another of Rick's double-barrelled anti-religion blasts and the hackles were rising; instead of which a quite tame missive (or should that be missile)! I've not watched South Park, but I know it has a big following, some of whom are friends and whose judgement I would generally agree with. Essentially, though, Islam is a religion of peace that has been hijacked by fundamentalists to the extent where it is widely distrusted, and I cannot blame anyone for mistrust of religion.
My sister married into the Plymouth Brethren religion - my brother-in-law was raised in that religion and decided to leave it when he married my sister. For those of you who are unaware of the Plymouth Brethren, they follow an elitist and exclusionist belief that anyone outside their faith is tainted and beneath them. By marrying outside the religion, my brother-in-law was disowned by his own family (his Grandparents never spoke to him again, and his father only ever spoke to him about business; to this day, cousins and other members of his family will not sit down with him or sleep under the same roof) and his friends turned their backs on him. You'll understand that I have strong emotions over this subject, so my words may be a little stronger than perhaps they ought to be, but in my opinion any 'religion' that splits families in this manner is nothing to do with the teachings of Christ, it's the work of the Devil. It's evil, pure and simple, and on a human level it's incredibly arrogant to look down on another human being as though they were lesser beings because they don't happen to share your faith.
All of which leads to believe that Rick's atheism isn't so bad. Better to live ones life without a faith than to live it as a bigot.

not just the plymouth brethren that split up families, jehovahs witnesses have similar attitudes.
Seriously the thing that I've never worked out is why Jehovah's Witnesses are so keen on recruiting.
They believe that 144,000 are going to be 'raised to heaven' apparently.
Surely each new recruit reduces their chance of having a ticket in this lottery???
Good point Bob , I dont like the fact they bring there young children round with them when looking for new members .

that is something i find disgusting mark.
they know full well that we will not close the door on them if they have a young child with them.
i used to live near one of their halls, 3 times a week i used to see these kids being dragged along, then after the meetings being dragged along with the door knocking.
Im sure we are not alone in feeling that way about it Howard .Im fine if there parents believe in it but they should leave the kids at home .
OH dont start me on jehovahs witnesses. when i gave birth to my eldest daughter i lost 4 and half pints of blood and was on life support after the birth, i needed an emergency blood trasfusion to which saved my life. The spring that followed i had a knock at door by two women jevohahs who i let them say their piece then i asked questions. When they found out i had been saved a transfusion the look on their faces changed, i got called satan! said that god wanted me and i should of gone to the light and left my new born motherless. As you may guess acrossing a new mum , lack of sleep and being told that to my face we then parted on bad terms, i still see that lady around and still get the dirty looks .
Everyone to their own beliefs and opinions as long as they dont force it upon people.

You should have said to them Melissa, didn`t God want the 6 million plus in the death camps in the last war, and where was he? They haven`t answered me on that one yet. Must delete #14.
