In all seriousness the best thing for Dover area would be to get rid of the whining low skilled Dovorians and replace them with high-achieving high-earning commuters. It's working a treat in Deal! You could forget the much anticipated Nandos, you'd be looking at a mega-Waitrose on the DTIZ site in the blink of an eye!
No 'affordable' housing in Dover? Well bugger off to somewhere like Hull then (average house price £134841) . I hear it's quite nice this time of year AND it's a European City of Culture (

2 January 2017 16:13322975Having worked variously as a petrol pump attendant, ice cream salesman, taxi driver, lathe operator, turret press operator, production line worker, surveyor's chainman etc I would suggest that even the 'lowliest' job can be done by people like me (and my kids) who have never thought any employment was 'beneath' them and viewed relying on the state when there was work to be done as immoral.
I can also assure you when employing anyone I was much more likely to take on someone on who had been flipping burgers rather than waiting on his/her fat arse for something more 'suitable' to come along! I've found this way of life works in places like the USA with people working long hours and more than one job, proud to provide for their family and accepting responsibility for their actions.
Weber called it the Protestant Work Ethic. I call it not expecting the world to owe me a living (or indeed anything else).

Poorly paid people are a fact of life - who do you think cleans the toilets at the Ritz?

2 January 2017 17:35322979As someone who many years ago moved from London to Deal it is only recently imagined itself to be posh since the pits closed.
When I lived in Deal it was full of miners not that there anything wrong with that, thank goodness I now live in Dover where even with its many faults we do not sneer at the less fortunate among us. Waitrose or another all round supermarket would wipe up down there.
The debunked Leisure Centre corner will be a road widener opportunity, together with more car parking.
The St. James's area could have accommodated decent houses. Prime family situation.

Capt Haddock, if your post #4 was directed at me, please re-read the above. I merely suggested that your model is flawed for without your "whining low skilled Dovorians" your street wouldn't be sanitised, your library wouldn't be open, your cafes wouldn't be staffed, your retail outlets wouldn't be staffed, your high street burgers would remain unflipped, your children/grandchildren would not have classroom assistants, your elderly and incapacitated loved ones would not get the care they deserve.
I didn't make the case for giving the low paid a pay rise (though I would quite happily) and I didn't suggest that your low skilled Dovorians are willfully avoiding work. The Trussell Trust has enough evidence of those in the bracket of "in work poverty".
