  I would add the old time footballers played because they loved the game rather than what they could financially get out of it, to many of present day footballers are a greedy load of prima donas.

  I was going to include the cricketers Howard but they have as you say slipped off the top of the pile. Still, a far better bunch who, to boot, have the courage to play what is a dangerous game in sometimes dangerous parts of the world.
  
  Some of the England footballers have something to commend them - Hart's ability and confidence, the enduring commitment of Lampard and Gerrard, the tenacity of Terry (though as a person he leaves much to be desired). You could similar things about Ashley Cole and Rooney.
  
  But as a whole, they come up well short, sometimes both in ability and character.
  
  Luckily this summer has provided plenty of other sports that we do excel at.

  After a wonderful summer of sporting achivements, from both Olympic and par Olympians, Andy Murray after winning Gold finally won his first Grand slam.
  I am not a tennis buff but it was good to see him win after so many disappointments.

  kp only ever plays for himself the impression i get from comments made by other england players is that they are not overly upset at seeing the back of him.
