09:3570804GaryC you are probably right, but then I never have had time for beggars of any description. Being charitable to one's fellow man in Nigeria is like posting an open invitation for the whole city to come and knock on your door, so, no, I don't give any of them the time of day.

11:1270829Update.
Door knocked on at nine sharp and I take guy into town and buy him a coffee.
Plausible tale. Wife + stepdaughter in Deal. Looking for work. Claims has OU degree. Background of being brought up in care in N. Ireland. Abused by father who got 'topped' during 'troubles'. Mother heroin addict.
Talked to local shopkeeper. Barred from shop. Abusive to staff. Has been banging on other doors locally asking for money for food.
Will be interesting to see if I get £10 owed back.
Have now done everything for the guy which I am going to do.
Feel sorry for the guy BUT he's got a roof over his head, he is not going to starve, and no-one is trying to kill him. Looks like he's one of the winners on this planet IMHO?

12:1370847From what you have posted Bob I would say you have been conned out of £12. Just one queery why take him into town, didn't you want him in your home?

I try to be neutral and polite but it is hard and getting even more difficult at times.

12:0771105Bob,
You gave him the benefit of being a decent man, down on his luck. You showed him that at least someone cares and takes an interest.
The following is just my opinion.
Now you know more about him. He needs to know that being abusive and banging on doors, is not acceptable and will only make his life harder.
No more lending him money, even if he pays up, it sounds like he is already going down that wrong road, relying on others. Lending him more money won't help him.
Try helping him find a job, with his knowledge. If he is not interested in getting employment, then he is one of Sid's rejects, but at least you tried.
Not all are hopeless cases and not to even try to help them, would be wrong, not just for the individual but for all of us.
