Roger - the Chamber has District-wide responsibilities, not just Dover. Yes, we did disengage from the market as I previously announced, but that does not mean we are not still active in Dover Town. Mike McFarnell joined the Board and is taking the lead in the Town.

Its probably all old history now and the people that were at the chamber then seem to be gone as far as I can tell. But rallying interest in the Pfizer situation is a good move by them at this juncture. Everyone pulling together as per picture on the frontpage has made a difference. It looked at one time that Sandwich would die...but apart from Sandwich, people all across the area were relying on the jobs there.
I did pop an email to Charlie on this to see if he had anything to contribute to the frontpage story... but havent heard anything..so far.

Answers are very simple Paul.
DDC are dealing with the the Planning [LDO-see press release] & business rates reductions & are lobbying central govt. with L&M the prospective purchasers to deal empty property rates which are not excluded.
South East Local Enterprise Partnership[SELEP] has partnered & sponsored Enterprise Zone & Regional Group Fund bids. Both Paul Carter & I represent DCC & KCC repectively on Pfizer Task Force & SELEP executive.
KCC [Paul Carter] & a business panel are dealing with Regional Growth Fund applications.
Locate in Kent & UKTI [inward investment arm of govt. ] arer working with L&M & Pfizer to promote overseas and national business initiatives.
A group of Business Angels & venture capital experts are working with Pfizer on employee spinoffs & set ups on site.
A stake holders group met last week to discuss with developers business uses other than Life sciences activties.
University of Kent has former Pfizer staff at Canterbury Innovation Centre & liaise with specialist Universities [Imperial College] etc.
Job Centre Plus have been active at the Pfizer site with job fairs & specialist employers.
A year on I reckon we are not far short of !000 jobs retained or being created with more activity in the pipeline.

Paul.
All very positive and I am pleased that the hard work by many, seems to be paying off.
I have to say though that it is sad that Betteshanger/Deal, is still waiting for all the promises that was made about their future, nearly 25 years ago.

Working away at the highest levels Gary.
New coalfield funds have been allocated nationally to complete programme.
I believe you could not get two bids approved in the same District for RGF & the bigger £40m allocation is better than nothing in general.
Charlie is suportative & working away in his circles.

That's a hell of a positive story for the Pfizer site Paul.
Local, regional, National and overseas support - well done to everyone involved.

On a recent tour of the District as part of my Lead Member for Regeneration post, we visited the old Pfizer social club and met with the owner and his senior staff.
Very impressive set-up: high quality gym with lots of good equipment, conference centre and much more besides.
It'll be opening soon and will be interesting to see if these facilities create good (and of course necessary) membership.
Good Luck to them.

Very interesting Howard...looks good, didnt see any of that but we might get an update through. Busy bee that Laura Sandys and Paul Carter is a likeable chap..made him very popular the way he stood up to central government and as a consequence although challenged strongly for his leadership recently...won through very easily.

I'd say this is excellant news for everyone; security of tenure now means more investment, so more jobs.
Onwards and Upwards.
