I have thought for a long while that it was about time to replace the dirge we currently have with something more stirring like most other countries seem to have. This comes in the wake of a motion in the commons that we should have an English national anthem to bring us into line with the other home nations.
Any suggestions?

As I understand it, it's not about a new British National Anthem but about one for England so that when it is sung just when England are being recognised.
No matter if you like the current British National Anthem or not there is nothing worse than at an event where the four Nations are concerned you get people of Wales, Scotland or Northern. Ireland booing the current National Anthem which is also their own. Each of them have their own Anthem they sing at events, so what is being said as I see it, so should England.
I would prefer that any change to our current National Anthem if there is to be one, should be done at the time of our new Monarch taking to the throne..

Two different issues here, the English anthem debate cleared the Commons, just a matter now of deciding which it will be. My choice would be "Jerusalem" as used by Rugby League fans, Rugby Union prefer a Negro Spiritual which is quite haunting. I get quite envious of the Welsh and Scots who have something stirring to sing before sporting events.
The issue of a British National Anthem is a bit more complicated but we need something that mentions our country unlike the present one that just glorifies our monarch.

We certainly could do with a new National Anthem rather than the depressing and out of date dirge that is really no longer apt for our modern day multi-cultural nation.
I like Jerusalem also Land Of Hope And Glory so would be happy if either one was chosen.

Much as I like "Jerusalem" it would have to be the English Anthem not the National one. I think "Land of Hope and Glory" would be the overwhelming choice of the people, failing that we could move with the times and get composers working on a new one.

Brian, Ode to Joy is already taken, it is the European Anthem or maybe that is why you would like it.

As already said on the thread "Jerusalem" is only about England so doesn't qualify as a national anthem.

Watched the Six nations rugby union clash earlier and was impressed by the gusto shown by players and supporters of Wales and Scotland. Tomorrow will be very different when England turn out.
For England I can only think of "Jerusalem" as appropriate. any other ideas?

Pete has come up with his favourite but would not go down well at Wembley or Twickenham.
Any more England suggestions?
