20:2887069Loved Ann Widdecombe until strictly as she always said what she though even if it upset her friends, the one comment is the about Michael Howard, what was it prince of darkness, actually I liked Michael the few times I met him.

20:2987070she described him as having "something of the night" about him.
michael howard was a ludicrous choice of leader for the blues, a real vote loser.

20:3487074yep and costly
in other threads we talk about policing priorities
i used to watch folkestone fc and when m howard attended he went into the seating area amongst a crowd of approx 22
and had 7 or 8 clear body guards around him

20:3887076Keith, security/protection applies to all former Home Secretaries, Northern Ireland SoS's until recently and all Former Prime Ministers.
Not their choice.

20:5587079Keith, terrorists etc. love crowded areas and regular visits to places from prominent people. Bread & butter stuff for them.
At one stage Kent had both Home Secretary & SoS Northern Ireland as MP's plus Chevening to cover for Foreign Secretary w/e residence. Very expensive on Kent taxpayer.

21:2787086you've certainly started one here vic.
i agree with john about tony benn and john smith, tom mentions another one in mr "pantsdown" as he became known.
vic makes a point about nigel farage, not an honourable member but a good entertaining speaker.
keith mentions mr hague, again a good one, i always though he was let down by his own side when leader.
much the same with ian drunken smith, lots of good ideas but did not have the backing.
the best debater i have ever seen is ken livingston, when i lived in london mrs thatcher would wheel out someone she wanted to get rid of to debate with ken on thames news. everyone knew who would win.
ken clarke is always interesting and a great survivor too, mores the pity he wants everyone let out of prison.

21:3387087willy was let down by advisors, theres no way he would have made those decisions alone.
but hes done well to return to front line politics
i listened to ken livingstone often in london's westminster hall a great debater and at one time lefty but moved away from his left beliefs in later times
but sure he will back as mayor of london at next election
another good debater is (not an mp) is rodney bickerstaff of the then NUPE union now unison.
