90th Anniversary of Unknown Warrior

Also some very interesting facts of wich I never knew.grass grows by the inches but dies by the feet. - 12 November 2010 18:1079848Here we are. We went to Tenterden yesterday, to see the Cavell van.
It was lovely to see it, and coupled to it was a waggon, or sister waggon to the one that would have carried the guard of honour as the train raced through the Kent countryside to London.
And here's inside. Beautifully done, wint interpretation panels, and even some firkins to represent barrels of soil brought back from the battlefields in which to inter the Warrior.
It all smelled beautifully of new paint. The floor is the very floor on which people would have walked on thos momentous days 90 years ago. We learnt that since Nurse Cavell's body was carried, all vans of this type were then known as Cavell vans.
A most appropriate day to visit, it being 11th Novmeber. We had had the privilege beforehand of being at the Boys' Grammar (thank you J!), as they dedicated their new weathervane (a memorial to their airmen).
The tunes and songs of the musical are still in my head. Thank you everfyone who has posted and emailed to say how much they enjoyed it.The Dover War Memorial Project

we all know that those who died in the second one gave us the freedom we enjoy today. - 12 November 2010 21:5079876My view of the First Worl War's opening bars is that many people may-be didn't realise that Austria did not intend invading Serbia to conquer terrirory. The declared aim was to enter Belgrade only and demand access to police reports on the White Hand members. Belgrade in those days was right on the border with the Austro-Hungarian Empire, so it would have meant going no further than a mile into Serbian territory, without necessarily combatting the Serbian forces if these did not intervene. To then leave Belgrade once the investigations were over and return across the border.
