It has just been announced as and from the 30th of April that the price of a first class stamp will be 60p.
the second class stamp will be 50p.
In anyone's book this is a chunky rise and will certainly hit the Christmas Card market I would think. One can only be grateful for computers and email.

Blimey - this will cost my and other businesses a fortune.
Just sending out my newsletters now will cost me nearly £90 a quarter. I dread to think what it will cost for my large reports that can weigh 1lb or more.

Email has resulted in the decline of real mail which has only served to push the postage price up. Another side effect of email has been the loss of the handwritten letter - though I know some still keep up the practice of real correspondence with friends and families.

been on the cards(excuse the pun) for some time
royal mail has been slowly increasing the price of stamps.
and of course we have the problem of competitors unable to compete with the price.
hate to think where this will all end up

I have never been a letter writer in fact I communicate more with family and friends by email and text than I ever did by post. I would have thought that the telephone was more to blame than email plus the price of stamps and awful late delivery times will not have helped.

I'll think twice about popping in the post office for a book of 12 first class stamps now.

So Keith - what is the pension fund got to do with it? It is certainly one very good reason not to buy Royal Mail though.
The pension is a massive liability, an open chequebook given it has what we call defined benefits.
The Royal Mail desperately needs private capital injected into it and some decent management. The costs have been going up for many years while the service has been steadily declining. I am not sure though whether even privatisation would be enough to save that business model given the modern developments that others refer to.

Long gone are the days when you would be waiting on a letter,to drop through your letter box kinder sad in a way, different ways of communication have taken over.
But 60p is a huge hike just wonder how many people will pay that.

# 13......gobbledegook/smokesceen.....
Pension liability will be removed by government prior to privatisation in 2014....
Companies are queuing up to buy our Royal Mail...................
UK appers to be the bargain basement saleroom run by a few `sharp` salesman...
If it moves ............Privatise it.......
As time goes by UK needs to have our Utilities in safe, trustworthy hands..........

It seems that anything complex and beyond the understanding of Reg, he brands as gobblegook because it is an inconvenient fact. Perhaps instead of his half-baked digs he should take time to understand the issues and provide some substance to his comments.
Mind you, now for once I agree with Reg on something - if it moves privatise it.... we would be far better off with the State owning and running less and less.....
As for the Royal Mail's pension liabilities, employer's have to make up funding shortfalls and for the Royal Mail to be privatised, yes, the shortfalls to that point will have to be paid up. That is the point of what I said in the context of my response to Keith's suggestion that the pension fund was an attraction for a buyer as if the new owner of RM would benefit from it. But what beyond then, the new owner would take over an expensive pension that would continue to accrue future liabilities via an open chequebook. Naturally the scheme would have to be closed to new entrants to protect existing pensioners and members and perhaps future accrual diverted to a new defined contribution pension as well. The government should do the same with all public sector schemes.

Turn what may be silver into gold Brian - the State is simply incompetent to run anything other than the Armed Forces and a police force.
