Rather a damning report overall. Haven't had any dealings with the William Harvey so cannot comment, i find the K & C top class in some things and useless in others, as for the QEQM i have had two experiences with them - both appalling so will not go near them again.
Staffing numbers seem to be down which puts a lot of pressure on the staff who do the extra work.

Over reacting on this we do have the best there is with all our hospitals.
Because at times things do not go the way they should or we think they should do not make them into bad hospitals,

Charlie has hit the nail on the head with these comments, closing so many Emergency Departments in smaller hospitals has certainly put extra pressure on the remaining EDs. Surely a state of the art ED is not needed for a simple broken arm that only needs plastering and definitely not for a cut that needs a couple of stitches.....
"We've been making the case for the new Dover Hospital to have effective emergency care supported by doctors. This would do much to take the pressure off A&E at the big hospitals and reduce the waits the report criticises."
"The full local diagnostic services at Dover and Deal we've campaigned for would also take the pressure off the big hospitals.".....
Surely a state of the art ED is not needed for a simple broken arm that only needs plastering and definitely not for a cut that needs a couple of stitches.

Just as well he hit the nail on the head Jan, rather than his thumb, or else he might have had to sample the delights of the William Harvey A&E, whose ethos always seems to be, 'what a great department this is, or at least it would be if it wasn't for all these sick people cluttering the place up'.
..and I do, unfortunately speak from experience...

My biggest bugbear is the admin side, a few weeks back i got a letter through offering an appointment for an assessment that i couldn't make so i rang the number they listed if there was a problem. Rang it and was told i needed another number, tried that and was continually asked for a extension number or state the department. Each time i stated the department the call was cut off, after 8 goes i gave up.
I then got another letter stating the date of surgery, this time i was given an extension number to ask for - got through first time and a voice said that she was on holiday until the 23rd of August and gave another number if the enquiry is urgent. Tried it many times and is just rings out.
No doubt the hospital will make great play of me missing 2 appointments.

There is nothing wrong with our 3 main hospitals they are the best in the UK and are very clean yes some times you have to wait to see a DR in A@E but we do have a good service overall.

I have had my fair share with hospitals. I do believe Ashford, Canterbury and Margate are hopelessly overrun by so many patients. The patientbooking system isnt very good either. At this day and age it needs urgent improvements.
I believe every town should have its own A&E and a smaller Hospital. It can be specialised in some areas. So people can get referred once in stable condition.
This would improve the situation dramatically. I have experienced the worst and the best treatment in hosptials. But it would be nice to have good treatment everywhere???
Vic believe me or not once people reach a certain age and have certain level of health issues, you wont get looked at too soon. This for me is a very worrying fact.

Kent & Canterbury for me, always very nice and helpful and caring, waiting to go in again hoping it will be K & C, wouldn't want to go into William Harvey or QEQM.

MRS Heike without reading out the long list both my wife and myself see a lot of all 3 hospitals.
Also as member of the trust I know from inside that there are a lot of good members of staff and helpers working hard to keep our hospitals the very best you will find in anypart of the UK and we are very lucky to have a very high standard of management in place running the trust backed up by good GPS in our towns.
The public only see the frontline of the hospitals and are led into to thinking about that part of cost.
But behind what you are getting and seeing is a very big cost that lots of the public do not even know about one of them bring the Hospitals and NHS waste services getting rid of Hospital waste cost runs into millions of pounds ,I know this myself because part of my working life was spend repairing and working in the hospital incinerateors each yellow bin that goes there and there are 1000s each day cost the nhs about £60 each .And there are 100s more things that cost millions to.
So it is not just about getting treated but what goes on behind that part.

Jean was under KCH for quite a long time when doing Peritoneal dialysis and received first class treatment there as well as when she had to stay in there.
I believe there are not enough qualified Renal Consultants who have the whole of East Kent patients to look after.

The new Dover Hospital will help out in that way Mr Walkden and in your case I am sorry to say that is no help but for others it will be.

But there won't be more Consultants Vic, to go on their rounds, they will still be stretched.

Mr Walkden there is to be a TV link up to all consultants and you will be talking to them via the TV on a one to one .
This very good plan and will save time and you will not have to go and see one at one of the major Hospital till treatment if you need it even then some treatment can be done at Dover.

We have telephone appointments with G.P's now so a video link would be the next progression for certain conditions.
