Tomorrow marks the 175th anniversary of the first public (steam) train to come to Dover. It arrived on 7th February 1844 as a service of the London and South Eastern Railway at what was to be called the Town station amidst much local celebration and jubilation. The event was reported fulsomely in the local press of the time.It must have seemed a miraculous achievement of the age, given the difficulties of construction through the cliffs and along the shoreline, thereby ending the tedious stage coach journey to the capital on an all important route linking London with Paris and the continent in general.A new world and the beginnings of the modern age opened with it.One hundred years afterwards even while war was still in progress,on 7th February 1944,an exhibition and celebratory lunch with many big-wigs present were hosted at the Maison Dieu. The events were again well reported in the local press.A catalogue of the exhibits is held at the Dover Museum. There is alas no record that the event was noted in any shape or form at the 150th anniversary on 7th February 1994.So here we are 175 years on - will anyone care less on the 200th anniversary on 7th February 2044?
