Sad to see the Bleriot memorial has been vandalised and the wording stolen - I seem to think they were made by Rick ?
Been nice knowing you :)
What a shame ,

I suppose one could now substitute 'Messerschmitt' for 'Bleriot'.
Seriously, this is terrible. Sadly, not shocking as it is so blasted predictable.

Sadly, it seems not, Ross.
The wood didn't weather well, unless it was supposed to turn that grey look.
Can't be monetary value as the reason, just mindless vandalism.

I suppose the wood could have been treated in order to weather better but some prefer the au naturelle look. But very sad to see the decline of the monument. Very sad. I will add a picture later of opening day...will look now. Interesting item Paul...to see the pictures there showing the decline.

These pictures following are from the Paul Watkins Collection and were taken at the opening ceremony in august 2009....grateful to Paul for these, i wasnt at the event so no pictures from me.
But all was optimism then as you can see. A great ceremony too by the looks of it.
Top shot shows Bernard Butcher, then Chairman of Dover District Council, making the opening speech. Thats the leader of Dover District Council Paul Watkins himself in the dashing hat, with his French counterpart. Just creeping into shot is Gwyn Prosser MP at the time.
The second picture shows the official ceremony in full flight.

I was up there about a month ago and everything was ok then,it is sad that people will steal history, yes they are just letters but this is where history was made and if they could these mindless vandals will steal anything.
If you knew what I know,we would both be in trouble!

Not sure by whom, but there is now a replacement
Been nice knowing you :)
Hurrah! It is scandalous if the initial problem was indeed vandals - but what a decent replacement. The wood could do with a bit if a treat though.

Terrible act of vandalism and a shame nothing is sacred.
I have contacts for smartwater, if those in charge need them.
The smartwater can have the Bleriot DNA in it.
