High Speed Train leaves Dover on the morning of
Monday Sept 7 at 6.42am, on its 'inaugural flight' with a full load of both bigwigs and fare paying passengers onboard.
Is this a great day for Dover?
Let us know what you think.
Comments welcome below its open to all.
More to follow shortly...including pictures of assorted bigwigs!
Yes there we are below, the assorted bigwigs as promised.

Local Labour MP for Dover and Deal Gwyn Prosser offers to drive us all on the magnificent high speed monster all the way to St Pancras, with the added promise that he will at no time veer to the left! The smiles were broad this morning from all sides, as so many different elements worked together in a terrific team effort to make this happen. It just goes to show what can be achieved if everyone pulls together.

Highly active in achieving this impossible dream was DDC Transport guru Cllr Nigel Collor who made this his personal dream for so long. " Seeing the HS1 service here at Dover Priory is a dream come true" said Nigel.
Nigel, who is also our representative at the KCC, is on the left hand side here in this picture and seen with our Mayor Cllr Sue Jones of Dover Town Council, while on the right is the familiar Cllr Bernard Butcher, Chairman of Dover District Council. As you can see from the pictures.. there is an outbreak of something that may pass for happiness on this morning of mornings.
Below we have on the left, although not terribly clear, speed in getting the pictures up made me rush the detail, is Nigel Collor giving the whole enterprise the thumbzzzup! That's Bernard beside him. Centre shot shows Gwyn and Bernard again in jovial form, while on the right we have our first photographed commuter for real, complete with coffee and newspaper, yes that's Charlie Elphicke, the Conservative challenger for the local parliamentary seat.

Gwyn Among the Cyclists. Sept 3.
Yes it's our man about town and Member of Parliament Gwyn Prosser, meeting up with some of the fantastic cyclists who are/were sporting the lycra on their 'Pedal to Paris' cycle ride, all in support of the Royal British Legion. They took a break from their superfit but gruelling journey at the Russell Street Carpark here in Central Dover...for a bit of a breather, some light refreshment, and a chance to meet up with our Member of Parliament Gwyn Prosser.

Pedal Power Continues...
Gwyn, who is Chairman of the All Party Cycling Group in Parliament, had intended to join up with the group of 250 men and women, taking part in this POPPY BIKE CHALLENGE 2009, at Capel-le-Ferne and ride with them to their staging post at Dover’s Russell Street Car Park (opposite the Leisure Centre). This didnt happen due to Merchant Navy Day committments but Gwyn was still on hand to greet the cyclists and wish them well.
Gwyn said:
"The work of The Royal British Legion in caring and campaigning for serving and ex-service men and women is outstanding and these Challenge Cyclists are to be applauded for their wonderful support. It’s a great honour for us to have the cyclists pedaling to Paris through Dover, as part of this great event, and we wish them all well.”
Pictures: Top shot shows Gwyn Prosser, MP for Dover and Deal, meeting some of the cyclists, there were 250 in all, under the shadow of our wonderful Dover Castle, which always makes a magnificent backdrop to any photograph. The picture on the left shows another enthusiastic cyclist. We singled out this attractive girl and heard her story. Her name is
Alison Lydon from Burton-on-Trent. Alison only took up cycling last January and is already proficient enough to be joining this elite group heading for Paris. Her personal best up to this point had been 60 or 70 miles in one day, but at this event on
Thursday Sept 3 she had already past the 80 mile mark. Very fit indeed! Good luck to them all!

Merchant Navy Day - The Ceremony on Dover Seafront. SEPT 3.
An old veteran has the support of a good woman as his turn comes to lay a wreath at the very moving ceremony at the famous statue on Dover Seafront. As always these solemn events are expertly handled and as mentioned, are very moving. A short service was carried out in the blustery conditions by the Rev David Ridley and was appreciated by a very good turnout of veterans, wives, and assorted dignitaries. The trumpet sounded, played once again by Town Sergeant Bryan Walker, and veteran seafarer and statue fundraiser extraordinaire, Mr Donald Hunter, said a few well chosen words. The wreath laying was elegant and dignified as you would expect. Pictures below show the individuals mentioned. As a town we do these things well.
