Unveiling of memorial plaque for Arthur Beresford Pite (1861 – 1934.)

As many of you will know Jeane Trend-Hill has been a member of Doverforum for a long time. Her psychic exploits here in Dover were well covered by both our local newspapers, and eventually even the national newspapers and magazines featured Jeane in their pages. Jeane, who is an author in her own right, has always taken a keen interest in Dover and its connections, and a particular interest in well known architect and educator Arthur Beresford Pite. Although Arthur was not born in Dover, he married a local girl, one of the Mowll family in fact, hence the connection. Jeane has spent a lot of time in Dover carrying out research, and one time yours truly and a number of other Doverforumites accompanied her on a local ghost hunt. A spooky night in the White Horse Inn and adjoining ruin. We saw a lot of spirits that night!

I will let the press release marking this occasion take up the story....

On 28th November 2009 at West Norwood cemetery London, Jeane Trend-Hill unveiled a plaque marking the 75th anniversary of architect Arthur Beresford Pite’s death. Wearing traditional Victorian mourning dress she delivered a speech at the graveside about Pite’s life and works and his grave restoration project for which she is raising funds. Jeane stated “As there are currently no visible inscriptions or identifying features on the grave, I wanted people to be able to find it easily and the name Arthur Beresford Pite architect and educator to once more be known.” Jeane, a photographer and author now living in Essex, has carried out much research on the architect having worked in his Euston Road building in North London for many years.

Jeane adds “Pite spent a good deal of his time in Dover in his younger days; he married a local woman, Mary Kilvington Mowll at Whitfield Parish Church in 1887 and they had four children – Arthur, Ion, Grace and Molly. It was through Dover Forum that I obtained information about Whitfield, some of the Mowll connections and the memorial dedicated to them in Cowgate cemetery whilst I was carrying out my research back in 2001. He was an important architect of his time and responsible for many buildings including the Burlington Arcade Piccadilly, Christ Church Brixton, Institute of Chartered Accountants in Moorgate, West Islington Library, All Souls School Marylebone and Holy Trinity Church Clapham, all of which survive today”.
