The Front Page. - Copy 239 (Neil Wiggins of People's Port. Dover Youth Choir)

1 March 2012

The People's Port popped back into the headlines this week when they sent out letters inviting all to become members of the DPPT ( Dover People's Port Trust) for £10. DPPT leading light Neil Wiggins posted the following on DoverForum yesterday...

Hi All,

DPPT is inviting all members of the wider public who live within, work within or have businesses with registered offices within the Dover District Council area to buy a membership share as per the DPPT constitution. DPPT is an Industrial Provident Society (IPS) constituted for mass membership. It is about the DPPT ensuring that it will be accountable to a membership that are fully representative of a wide cross section of the community all of whom know that they have a say in the strategic development and direction of the port because they will own a share of it through the DPPT when our bid is successful.

This share issue is not about how much money it raises, it is about demonstrating a commitment to a truly enduring stake belonging to the communities most affected by the port's operations and development in the port...Government Criteria number 1 ...... shall deliver a significant and enduring stake for the community in the future direction and development of the port...... DPPT aims to prove that support for community ownership extends well beyond the bounds of the area sampled in last year's Parish Poll and that the communities of Dover and Dover District are committed enough to ensuring that the port's future ownership being in community hands that they are prepared to put in good money in order to try and ensure that it happens.

Also in response to a question on rail access, Neil Wiggins said the following...

Rail must be a key part of any development plans at any major port anywhere in Europe. Dover is no exception. I can assure you that the rail link has been discussed and DPPT has said, on a number of occasions, that the current DHB Masterplan will need a complete review once the future of the port has been settled. The DPPT team and I cannot conduct an effective review from where we sit at the moment, so detail of any revisions to the Port Masterplan that may be required in order to accommodate rail capacity will, I'm afraid, have to wait until we are in a position to conduct an effective review.

Kent Police present £500 to the recently formed Dover Youth Community Choir.

Chief Inspector Ken Elmes made the presentation of money from the police property fund to chairman and choir director Charles Spanner and junior chairman Daniel Carpenter.

The choir started in September last year and Mr Spanner said:

“The money is a great boost and will help towards buying new music, hiring rehearsal rooms and for taking the choir to sing at other venues.”

The Kent Police property fund is generated from the sale, at auction, of unclaimed lost property and items seized in police operations. The proceeds raised at these auctions are then presented to local charitable groups that work for the good of the local community.
