The Front Page. - Copy 216 ( Hospital Rally Call, Pitman's Award, RNLI Callout, Seafrance)

4 December 2011

Our leading hospital campaigner, and of course tip top forumite, Reg Hansell, is organising this latest Hospital Rally this coming saturday....see details in the poster left. Reg is hoping for a very big turnout so that all us Dovorians together can show the wider population, and the powers that be, how much we desire a hospital of our own, right here in Dover. Posters have been delivered to homes and are being delivered as we speak in order to get the message out.

So come on down to Market Square before 10am and join in. The Doverforum teamsters will be there and will get some good pictures of the event to feature later here on this frontpage. But above all a good turnout is needed. All sections of the media will be there, so it is vital that they see the passion we have for a new hospital of our own.

If the turnout is good the pictures will go Southeast-wide. A successful rally can make a big difference. You might remember the Anti Prison Rally of a few years back. All political persuasions here in Dover joined forces for that spectacular rally and the result was win win...we didnt have a prison forced upon us. Now is your chance to call for a hospital, for a better future, so that you and your family can be cared for locally. PB.

KENT STUDENT PICKS UP NATIONAL AWARD AND SECURES DREAM CAREER

Stacie Pettman (in red above), from River in Kent, has been crowned ‘Student of the Year’ by leading training organisation Pitman Training. Stacie, who has transformed her career from waitress to legal secretary in just a few months, studied with Pitman Training here in Dover and has picked up £1000 cash as well as the national accolade. She beat off competition from other Pitman Training students from across the country and her award was presented to her at a recent ceremony by Channel 4’s Fairy Jobmother, Hayley Taylor.

Stacie, 21, is now working for Dover-based legal firm Mowll & Mowll – a role she has secured on the strength of her diploma from Pitman Training and thanks to the support of Dover Centre Director Paula Elliott who said:
“We’re really thrilled for Stacie. All of our students work hard with their training but she really put in the extra effort and it’s paid off, in more ways than one.

“We support all of our students in their search for a job or new career – including advice on their CVs and interview technique. Because Stacie had achieved such a high standards we were pleased to recommend her to our own firm of solicitors – Mowll & Mowll – and we’re delighted that she secured her first legal secretarial role with them.”

Stacie has proven herself to her employers and now works for two of the partners in probate and commercial conveyancing – a role she chose from three job offers she received in just one week after she achieved her diploma from Pitman Training.

Stacie commented: “I was really pleased to have successfully completed my training and then to have secured my job with such a great company, so to have been presented with this award really is the icing on the cake.

“I’d recommend Pitman Training to anyone wanting a change of career – the support that they’ve provided really has been incredible and I’m so grateful to Paula and her team for guiding me every step of the way into my dream career.”

Stacie started with Pitman Training in 2010 as she wanted a change of career and was keen to move into secretarial work. Over the last 12 months she has achieved a Legal Secretarial Diploma with Distinction and 4 Microsoft Office Specialist certificates in Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint. She also gained distinctions in 10 other subjects including Teeline and Word part 2 and her typing speed is 95 words per minute.

Channel 4’s Fairy Jobmother Hayley Taylor presented Stacie with her award, commenting: “Stacie really is a deserving winner and she has proven that with hard work and the right support and advice you really can turn your life around and achieve your dream job – even in these difficult economic times.

“So many people that come to me for advice in their careers are proud to say that they have achieved diplomas through Pitman Training and I’ve seen the edge that it can give to their CVs – something that Stacie Pettman can proudly confirm and I wish her every success for the future.”

Dover Lifeboat responds to medical emergency on cargo ship.

RNLI volunteers at Dover were called into action on Friday evening (2nd) when a crew member aboard an Antigua and Barbuda registered cargo vessel became acutely ill.

The master of the vessel contacted Dover Coastguard to request assistance and after consultation with hospital doctors it was advised that the man be brought ashore.

A few minutes after the lifeboat crew’s pagers sounded at 5.55pm City of London II was underway to rendezvous with the 900 tonne cargo vessel. The 70m long cargo vessel altered course to minimise the time it took for the lifeboat to reach it. Once the lifeboat met the other vessel two lifeboat crew members transferred to the cargo vessel to assess the casualty.

On arrival it was found that the casualty had collapsed following complications from a pre-existing condition and after first aid treatment, given by his crew mates, he had made a rapid recovery. Following further consultation via radio from a doctor, the man declined to be brought ashore by lifeboat but agreed he would see a doctor when the vessel next entered port.

Another good result there for our Dover Lifeboat guys but did you know....
these....Key facts about the RNLI.

The RNLI charity saves lives at sea. It's volunteers provide a 24-hour search and rescue service around the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland coasts. The RNLI operates over 230 lifeboat stations in the UK and Ireland and has more than 100 lifeguard units on beaches around the UK. The RNLI is independent of Coastguard and government and depends on voluntary donations and legacies to maintain its rescue service. Since the RNLI was founded in 1824 its lifeboat crews and lifeguards have saved over 137,000 lives.

Dover Lifeboat station has been operating since 1837.

I see no ships......

Well..perhaps one in the distance.....
Despite the two operating companies P&O and DFDS increasing their fleet by one ship apiece, there are still gaps in the scheduling, and vacant slots in the harbour where Seafrance used to be...as you can see from the picture above taken a day ago. There has been no further news as to what will happen with regard to Seafrance, but the longer their attractive vessels rest up in mothballs in Calais the less likely it is that they will return. But fingers crossed....nobody wants to see up to 800 people lose their jobs at Christmas.
