Putting new tourism investment on the map

Friday, 29 May 2015
Future investments in tourism attractions in the Dover District are taking shape, with a range of new projects from partners, including the WW2 'deep shelter' tunnels and sound mirrors due to be opened at Fan Bay in July this year.

New projects were showcased at a tourism networking event held last week. This included updates on latest projects from the Heritage Lottery funded Up on the Downs Landscape Partnership, including the National Trust's restoration work at Fan Bay. There were also updates on the £1.5m Kent Mining Heritage Museum, due to open in 2017 as part of the Betteshanger Sustainable Parks project, and plans from the Land Trust to open up Fort Burgoyne in 2018.

The event was organised by Dover District Council's Tourism and Museum Service, and was hosted at the Port of Dover's recently refurbished Cruise Terminal 1.

Partners welcomed the news of new investment in tourist and heritage attractions, with the tourism industry bringing £250m to the local economy, according to recent figures.

Cllr Keith Morris, DDC Cabinet Member for tourism, said: "It's great to see an impressive line-up of new attractions to further boost our tourism offer. As well as attracting tourists, new investments like the Fan Bay defences will also be a popular attraction for local people."
