Kent Police take to the streets to deter motorists from speeding

Tuesday, 23 September 2014
Kent Police officers and special officers took to the streets of Dover last week in a bid to deter motorists from speeding and to offer advice on road safety.

The enforcement and awareness operation complemented a countywide initiative held during the summer to reduce the numbers of people killed and seriously injured on Kent's roads.

Officers monitored motorists at various locations in and around Dover including Townwall Street and Snargate Street during the afternoon of Tuesday 16 September and a small number were reported for excess speed.

Special Sergeant Paul Johnson, who ran the Kent Police operation, said: "Only a small number of drivers were reported during the speed enforcement operation, which is good news.

"The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA)'s Advanced Drivers and Riders and The Institute of Advanced Motorists can help any class of driver or rider to increase their ability and control their speed if they have a problem with that."

Councillor Nigel Collor from Dover District Council who came along to the operation said: "I was honoured to be invited to attend; both the briefing and the roadside operation was extremely eye opening.

"Road safety is extremely important to us all, especially these days as traffic volume continues to grow and especially in a historic town like Dover where many of the roads were built for horse drawn carriages and not fast cars and heavy lorries.

"More awareness by road users of all types, and enforcement by Kent Police on those using our roads dangerously is essential."
