A few things that spring to mind by life long Dover people who should know better.
a) The Council should charge less rent on shops.
b) The money spent on the new promenade should have been spent on the town.
c) The council should built an arena like the 02 in London(read that today).
d) What is the Grand Shaft?
e) The council purchased the "Big screen".
f) Why don't the council get someone to open a bowling alley/ice rink/music venue etc
Will add others when I think of them.

Another couple of gems.
A) Charlie should have got the rail line up and running by now.
B) DHB have the town's future at the forefront of their plans.

(1)The money for the new promenade was a grant at could only be used in the way it was it was not council money or D,H,B, money but a grant,
(2) A arena like to O2 in London costed many millions of pounds to build and after the event it was build for it was nor used for years costing the tax payer millions to keep it up. And was not till it was sold off did it start paying for it self.
Dover would not have had the funding to build anything like that and even if it had it would never have paid for it self.
(3) The Big screen again was not purchased by the D,D,C, it was given to Dover but the council had to take over the cost at some point to keep it working and in the end they took it down.
(4) It would need funding to build a Bowing alley etc that could only come from a P/ company and none came forward to do that. Councils have had very big cut backs over the years in their funding from the KCC . they did not then like now have funding to build anything like that and the council tax was caped on top of all that.
(5) The Grand Shaft is the E/H not the council. And last they might be right about the rent for shops in the town centre but the rest is all wrong.I have done a edit on this post because I got it wrong. Sorry.

Always amuses me when I hear people calling for a bowling alley, when there has been 4 lanes in Dover since I was a kid. (Possibly out of use now)

The Grand Shaft until recently was owned by DDC as Richard Mahoney found out to his cost but I think now it is run as a charity by WHPS.

The latest misinformation from someone who lives on the Folkestone Road who claims that it is full of asylum seekers and refugees, from various other conversations I have overheard he is not alone in his thinking.

Dover Express yesterday announced that 600 houses were to be built on the Western Heights, this was soon rectified by someone who lived up there who pointed out correctly that the figure was nearer 30. How refreshing I thought for a few moments before someone else claimed that the Removal Centre was being pulled down to make way for them!!

The Dover Express gives out so much misleading information that you can not really believe anything they report.
Do they ever check their facts?

We live in an ever faster moving world with newspapers(national and local) having to update websites by the minute with no time for proof reading only making sure they get enough comments to please their advertisers. The Express gets most flak locally mainly because the Mercury rarely post anything.

Not so for the print copy, they have an editorial deadline to give time for proof reading and it would be a fool of an editor that publishes without minimal checks or they leave themselves open to prosecution. The current climate in the media makes it an even more critical aspect of journalism.
