Earlier this evening a fire engine with lights flashing past my house drew my attention, it turned into Clarendon Street and inched its way forward to till it came to a halt about ten minutes later a third of the way down. Hopefully the time it took didn't put anyone in danger but the facts have to be faced that too many roads are clogged up with parked vehicles making it extremely difficult for the emergency services. As far as I could ascertain there were no illegal or badly parked vehicles just too many work vans that are meant for the narrow streets of our country that were built with horse and carts in mind.
Many of the cars near to me are only used at weekends as the owners commute to work and I believe Commander Codfish posted statistics on here at one time about the percentage of time that private cars were actually used.

Howard to be fair this issue has been raised over the past 30 years with no real solutions.
Rightly or wrongly cars park on pavements but if they parked on the road nothing much would get up or down the road.

The average car is parked at home for 80% of the time, parked elsewhere for 16% of the time and is
only on the move for 4% of the time. See report by RAC below.

Just witnessed in Worthington Street a large Estonian registered parked on double yellows and well out from the kerb, resulting in a 61 bus being unable to get through and within a minute traffic backed up to the Folkestone Road roundabout.

I suppose being left-hand drive helps in these situations:

That car had a blue and white police tape around it the other day. It’s been there a while by the look of it.

It's the cemetery entrance by the Girls Grammar and Charlton school where all the parents in their 4x4s wait for their children.

Indeed. Though I'd have preferred a large 'It's a cemetery, have some respect' sign, just to prick any remaining consciences.

As I frequently walk through there at all times of the day, I'm not too sure if any of the people that park there would even realise it's a cemetery and it will be interesting to see how many just simply drive and park further in, mind you, then it might sink in! Unfortunately, respect for cemeteries is a strange thing to many these days, unless they have a loved one buried there.
