The Front Page. - Copy 187 (The Carnival)

5 July 2011

The David and Linda Hannent Garden Party in Castle St is now a well established precursor to the arrival of the Carnival. This year was no exception. The Hannent event is growing in popularity and this year it was standing room only. The usual routine is that upon the chime of 6PM all shuffle out onto Castle St itself to wait for the passing procession..and this we duly did.

So there we were...all agog on the pavement and breathless with quivering anticipation. We could hear the sound of carnival, the throbbing music, the cheering, the jollity...then round the corner into Castle St came one solitary figure marching down the centre of the street...we thought...is that it!! is that the carnival !!?

But when everyone saw it was Cllr Nigel Collor a rousing cheer went up from the crowds on the pavement. The picture shows Nigel acknowledging the cheers with his usual good humour. Nigel was walking the route ahead of the Carnival making sure all was in order.

Nigel is both a DDC Councillor at cabinet level and also our KCC representative for Dover Town. Recently Nigel has given KCC Community Grants to a number of very exciting events helping them to go ahead...the Carnival itself, The Regatta, and The Armed Forces Weekend. Dover has certainly had some fine events to enjoy recently.

Information on the Pictures just in from Graham Tutthill Chief Reporter DOVER MERCURY.

Hi Paul
Saw your appeal to Michelle for names of the bands. I know she’s busy so I thought the Mercury could come to the rescue as we had staff there covering it!!

The first picture is of John and Carol Hunnisett (in Tudor costume) from the Lewes Bonfire Society making their first appearance at Dover Carnival.

The left pic (red and yellow outfits) are the steel band Bloco Fogo. Popeye on the right is Ron Everett, a regular visitor to the carnival for many years.

The four in kilts are from the 79th Cameron Highlanders, a re-enactment group from Fort Amhurst, who linked up with the Western Heights Preservation Society.

On the right (girls in USA outfits) are from the Dover-based Beddow Academy.

The girls in uniform are the Haverettes Girls Marching Band from Essex (the clue is in the name on the drum!!)

The bottom pic is of the band of 354 (Dover) Squadron of the Air Training Corps.

Full details, results and loads of photos in this week’s Dover Mercury!!!!
