Julius Caesar lands near Dover on his first attempt at invasion of Britain

Date: 26 August 55 BC
Julius Caesar first arrived in Britain with 8 ships and around 12,000 men, and unable to land at Dover due to the number of warriors, horsemen and war chariots waiting on the cliffs, he sailed north and anchored somewhere near where Deal now stands.

The subsequent attack was ultimately unsuccessful, as was another attempt the following year, and it would take the Romans almost another hundred years before they finally conquered Britain in 43AD.
