    Labour councils using zero-hours workers

The FT reports that Labour-run councils across the UK are among the many local authorities using zero-hour contracts in an attempt to make savings. The paper claims that six Labour-controlled councils in London - Brent, Ealing, Merton, Newham, Hounslow and Tower Hamlets - use workers on contracts with no guaranteed hours, while Labour-run Doncaster employs some 300 people on similar contracts. Anne Mitchell, spokesperson for Unison, the public sector union, said the use of the contracts was "spreading exponentially" through the public sector. "The reason why councils are doing this is because they are being screwed into the ground financially by government cuts." Labour has argued the contracts, which have been scrutinised in the private sector, are fuelling an underemployment crisis.
