Nigel Farage has praised Henry Bolton, Ukip’s latest leader, for finally hitting the headlines after his affair with a 25-year-old model. The MEP turned local radio presenter today held a meeting with Michel Barnier to tell Europe’s lead Brexit negotiator why voters chose leave the EU. Mr Farage, 53, who separated from his wife amid reports of affairs with younger women, could not resist commenting on Ukip’s newest leader, who has only risen to public prominence, after months in the job, because of his personal life. “It is up to him what he does. At least he is being talked about now,” he said.

Mr Bolton, 54, who was elected as Ukip’s leader in September, left his wife and spent Christmas with Jo Marney, a party member who is less than half his age. Mr Farage hinted that Mr Bolton was finally doing something right. “Here’s a chap with a distinguished career, decorated for bravery in the police, won an OBE and was employed here,” he said. “He is a very likeable bloke but nobody is interested in that. People are now writing about him and they weren’t before. It’s very, very difficult to get voted for if nobody has ever heard of you before.”

After a 40-minute meeting that he requested with Mr Barnier, Mr Farage said that the EU still did not understand why Britons had voted for Brexit. “He’s got the view it’s because people have been promised a lot of money for the health service. What he really didn’t understand at all was that open-door immigration within the EU absolute key driver of all of this. He really doesn’t see that,” Mr Farage said.
