Rightly or wrongly, the reason Cameron made a stand on this issue is because most of the European heads of government agreed Juncker was the wrong person to lead the commission. When it came down to it, however, they (Merkel in particular)bowed to domestic political pressure. This whole episode has been caused by a power grab by the European Parliament based upon their own interpretation of the Lisbon Treaty, and it is doubtful it will be allowed to happen again. They have ended up with a candidate none of them wanted, but only two of them, Cameron included, actually stood their ground.
