    So true, and even more glaringly obvious now given that the brown-leather-trousered one decided against any kind of direct contact with the survivors and families of the Grenfell Tower fire. The woman clearly lacks empathy and is incapable of any kind of spontaneous engagement with people, preferring the structured and rigidly controlled environments of the cabinet office, parliament or media studios.

    But I'm not psychoanalysing here: this is increasingly the case with politicians, many of whom have simply chosen politics as a 'career' and have little understanding of the world outside university, business and political office. What's more, despite their pathetic attempts at individualisation (Miliband's T-shirt or Cameron's rolled-up shirt-sleeves anyone?) and their frequent assertions that 'we are all in this together', they are virtually indistinguishable and, as a political class, have little but contempt for the smelly and awkward mass, which they view as merely a resource to be managed.
