After the momentous 66% (of predominately Catholic) Irish Republic vote to legalise abortion, isn't it somewhat bewildering that the largely protestant Northern Ireland people are denied by their majority party (DUP) which still maintains a head in the sands approach?

The PM is somewhere between a rock and a hard place on this one. Many of her MPs are demanding a Commons vote which would likely end up with same result as the Irish Referendum. Despite the province having this as a devolved issue there is currently no assembly so Parliament could make the decision. We know that she is not strong ethically and relies on the DUP keeping her in power so we can safely predict which way she will go on this.

#3 a very accurate analysis. A way out is for her to give the option to the DUP of a Commons vote or a N.I. referendum - either way the likelihood is that change is on the horizon. Shift happens, to coin a phrase.
