Jacqui we have huge respect for our veterans which is why both events were organised, DTC done nothing - that's where the disrespect lies with them. The veterans were extremely pleased to attend both functions & due respect was given to them - they gave us our freedom & every year they get less & less we owe them so much. Please do not think for 1 minute that anything we have done over the past 2 days has been for " ego boosting " it was done to honour our brave men Lest We Forget

Interesting comment re the email, will look into this. Yes members of staff were involved in event on sea front, which took place slightly later than was originally planned. and as I have explained on another thread I was asked by the Dover greeters to meet the Americans for literally a few minutes, they were in the town from the cruise ship and important to give them a welcome. It was not planned, tookl place purely by chance. I returned to the town council office for presentation and awards ceremony taking place at 11.00 a.m. This was with youngsters who have been on course with Prince's Trust. Been in diary for some time.
i had, rightly or wrongly, been given impression that I would not be welcome at the memorial VE event. I attended an event, part of national marking of VE Day at Capel and tomorrow have been invited as Mayor to the British Legion to take part in their marking of VE Day,

Just finished watching the VE day concert on BBC, worth the licence fee on its own.
Worth remembering that it was a celebration of victory and peace, nothing to do with the d day landings or other battles.

Howard I to have watched that programme wonderfully done.Yes VE Day was to celebrate the end of the war and those of us who lived through those years of war recall what a day that was.Following on from Pams posting yes we will both be their tomorrow united to mark the occasion at an event put on by a The Royal British Legion.
it's called working together.Sadly there are those who have this idea that we do it for our own ego.Far from it .Both Pam and I would have given help if asked..Indeed we have worked together on other events.

Please do look into the email Pambrivio, I think you will find what I've said is true - you may also wish to refer to the Dover Express who were sent a copy at the time because we feared there would be criticism over this & sent it to cover ourselves. Who gave you this impression that you would not be welcome ? Maybe if some assistance had been offered for the ceremony & for our celebration today instead of constant barriers put in our way it quite possibly could have been different. Was this email sent with your backing ? If not you haven't got your finger on the pulse. You refused us the town hall because you told us the vote was being counted there - clearly untrue, you also told us that you would be too busy with the election to arrange anything for VE Day which is why Augusta Pearson did it, strange that even the Government in the midst of a general election managed to attend a service at the Cenotaph which you must have noticed has several flags on it - which is another story & another battle to get the currant siting of the flag pole at our Memorial moved. By the way we also spoke to a few Americans who were actually appalled that our Union Flag was stuffed in the corner.

Just quick comment, booking of town hall is nothing to do with the Town council, it belongs to Dover District council who I know did have it reserved for possible counting of votes.

Pam you beat me to it.Pam quite rightly says the Town Hall comes under DDC as it is owned by DDC and they take the bookings.I wanted to put on an event for VE Day it was suggested a church Service however because of the election we did not have the resource.Most staff were on duty Thursday morning and then at the count as we're most Councillors for ten hours and some longer .Polliing stations were manned from 7.00am until 10.00pm There were three elections on the same day and the turnout was very high.
I understand DDC staff helped with the event in Pencester .Most people do not understand the role off DTC and DDC. the role of District Chairman and a Town Mayor.
If asked I would have helped.I gather there was no road closure or PA system .I could have helped with this .It was made clear the District Chairman was not required.
the flags at the cenotaph do not fly freely.

Lyn I had not read anything about the Memorial event only the Pencester event, hence my comment as I thought it had not been publicised at all.

Oh dear Howard foot in mouth again ! The past 2 days prove that Augusta Pearson - let's give her her name - is correct it was organised by the people for the people not by DTC - so who needs them ? I trust you've seen all the wonderful photos that are appearing all over FB all taken by the people of Dover, with lots more to follow everyone is happy, can you not give credit where it's due ? Augusta worked tirelessly for these events & funded everything herself, all of us that helped gave our time gladly for our vets & in memory of those that died. Every penny collected for charity will go to charity. DTC could have earned a lot of brownie points if they had helped us instead of going against us we had to overcome a lot of hurdles. So you read our FB pages I hope you enjoy them.

Just to add Pambrivio - the Town Clerk told us that the Town Hall was unavailable not DDC seems this lady has an awful lot of power for an unelected person.

Couple of things here Lyn.
Firstly I am blocked along with many others from her Facebook utterings, her Facebook "friends" copy and paste the vile stuff some of which is litigious.
Secondly you said the Town Council was welcome now you say they are not. Which statement was true?
