I agree with Buckland's statement that 'we face an unprecedented situation of severe gravity.' It is indeed grave that the Home Secretary struggles to remember the script she's been handed by Cummings,

doesn't know the difference between 'terrorism' and 'counter-terrorism', and believes 'a raft' is something you construct when your boat's sunk rather than a motley mass of rubbish. Yet more grave is the continued financial abuse of the system of criminal justice by successive governments while simultaneously blaming the system's struggling actors for its failures. But graver still is the piecemeal erosion of English liberties in the name of public protection by ignorant, opportunist, authoritarian politicians playing to a gallery of cholerics who eat outrage for breakfast.
