Most private landlords use letting agents. One such local agent tells me that his ideal tenants are working married couples from Poland. Burnham's posturing is just pork-barrel politicking.

Who would be prosecuted in the event of an illegal immigrant being found renting a property? Doubtless the owner and the letting agent would both say the other was responsible.

Even if the landlord and/or the letting agent sees documents how are they supposed to know if they are real or fake.

I think the people doing the enforcing have to be reasonable and if the photocopy taken of the I.D. looks genuine then no action should be taken.
