  It is archaic, Jan. Running a google search on "mayor of Dover" is a salutary experience in understanding what the world outside our town will make of the role. As the Cap'n says, the Town Council is a fairly powerless body save for allotments and toilets. If tradition decrees that we must preserve this unnecessary drain on taxpayer's money, then let's make the mayor's role purely ceremonial. The recent Zeebrugge raid ceremony was a great success but I know of one local ex-serviceman who was deterred by the presence of certain "dignitaries" whose life experience could not be further removed from that of the military.
