  Bob, as I am sure you well know, the key premise Chomsky puts forward in his book "Manufacturing Consent" is that the news media manipulate us all (if we let them) not only by the way they report on news, including their political/editorial bias, but also the prominence they give to it or not and the stuff they choose not to report on at all. The latter is also one of the major premises of much of Pilger's output.
  
  As for your point about the role of the security services, of course they keep tabs on politicians, after all the vast majority are vainglorious fools, just the sort of cannon fodder spies love.
