GaryC - please re-read what you said. #2847

What is that sad case of the widow got to do with 'all politicians who choose to top up their already swollen bank balances in this way' ? This is nothing whatsoever to do with any politician topping up their bank balance. It is about an over-complex tax credit system that should never have been introduced. The repayments of over-paid tax credits goes into the public coffers as well, not into politicians bank accounts. There are just as many people who fail to claim because of the complexity as get into problems as did this lady. Glad she has had some help but this situation should never have arisen.

You then go on to tax - a different issue.

Everybody, rich and poor, have a right to pay only the tax legally due - full stop. Incidentally, a recent court case confirmed what I have been saying for ages, financial advisers and accountants have a duty of care to save clients tax by whatever legal means are available.

I am no friend of the banks, I spend too much time helping to correct poor or ill-judged investment advice they provide. They did contribute to (not cause) the problems we have and that contribution has its roots in the 1997 regulatory reforms and the poorly devised inflation brief to the Bank of England. As Mrs T recognised, banks are not 'ordinary' businesses. By the same token the amount of ill-informed abuse they and The City get is damaging to a major revenue earner and employer that brings massive benefits to this country.

If you want a better wealthier country then it is only successful businesses can can provide it. Not governments. Pile on taxes, pile on rules red tape and regulation then they will be hampered and unable to complete and be as successful as you say you want them. Governments get in the way, they are what hamper business, they are who caused the financial crisis. They spend to much, do too much, interfere too much. Government is essentially incompetent.

It seems that you think more tax, rules, red tape and interference by government in business and individuals can help the situation - it does not.
