    The situation here is also muddied by the existence of double taxation treaties. The Americans always go out of their way to ensure that they are as one-sided as possible in their favour, forcing US corporations to pay most of their tax at home while ensuring that foreign companies pay their share in the US. As an aside, I would add that in the US, the IRS has real teeth whereas HMRC is not quite as effective.
