Stuart, for trade to be more expensive, this could only happen if customs duties were imposed.
Currently, most trade between us and European EU countries is free of import duty.
If duty were imposed reciprocally, only those products imported/exported between us and the EU would become more expensive accordingly, but more money would enter the Treasury (both ours and theirs).

Import duties could be a simple 1%, or 5%, or 10%, or 100% .... from very little to a very lot.

So if the State got more revenue through import duties on imported EU products, we would not lose out, as the State could impose less taxation on other things, be it petrol, electricity, gas, income tax...
So as a Country we would not be net losers. Nor would the EU for the same reason.

However, leaving the EU does not necessarily mean we and the EU would introduce import duties towards each others products, We most probably wouldn't, not least because western European wages are the same as ours, and there is no risk of unfair competition such as with Chinese products, which are produced at a fractional wage compared to ours or European wages.

As I see it, a very small number of hard-core pro EU supporters in Parliament would like to make believe that a trade war would break out between Britain and the EU countries once we left, with high import duties being imposed, and factories closing down (for some reason only in Britain and not in Europe), mass unemployment (for some reason only in Britain not Europe), hyper inflation (only in the UK not Europe), bank crashes (here and not there in Europe)...

A five year old child could suss out the drivel coming from these few compromised politicians and estimate that it is just very cheap and nasty propaganda to bolster their agenda.

    And why?
Because this handful of fruitcakes has led us into the EU catastrophe and guided us through all the tours and phases of economic self-destruction that has hit us and Europe equally.
Just think of the names: Heseltine, Lord Mandelson and Ken Clark, and you should realise that a tree is recognisable by its fruit.

Don't expect cherries to come forth from a thistle-tree, Stuart.
These are failed Europhiles who know that they can boast of our 22% youth unemployment as much as of Greece's and Spains 58% youth unemployment.

They are the same sort of people as those who got voted out in Greece, where each day unemployment goes up by 1,000 numbers, according to Al Jazeera.
Yes, because the EU won't tell you these figures, Stuart, and won't show you what misery is currently going on in Greece.
Suffice it to know what we have in our own Home Country as not to believe these failed Euro-politicians who have come back to open their mouths in front of the Press, these failed relics of the past!
