The Tories took us in and the Tories took us out (assisted by UKIP, their unarmed wing): now May has the toad, let's hear it croak. Her plea is tactical, not strategic: she doesn’t give a fig for the ‘national interest’, but she does need to spread the blame if it all goes belly up. Historically there’s been a sceptical strain in the Labour Party, and Corbyn was carrying on this tradition when he ‘campaigned’ for Remain. But if Labour hasn’t learned lessons from the Liberal Democrat experience with the bufotoxic party then they deserve everything they’ll get. After all, one of the Tory refrains over successive election campaigns has been how alliances and coalitions are something to be feared: only self-interest and the fear of losing power explains the sudden turnabout.
