Don't expect on great revelations on Friday. I can't imagine that Charlie will either plead guilty or that the beak will somehow determine there's no case to answer. Crown Court sometime in the future is all that will emerge, I suspect.

Which begs the very obvious question as to what will happen in the now almost inevitability of a GE sometime later this year. He appears to have local support. And presumably his continual line-toeing has saved him from any Cummings led ("foul-mouthed oaf" to use Sir Roger Gale's rather appropriate term) cull. But what if he were to lose? Any criminal conviction can lead to a by-election given the support of only 10% of the electorate. The whip's office presumably believe he must be on some sort of thin ice to have withdrawn the whip in the first place. Does this mean we might have a new Tory representative plucked from the ranks?

    Somebody must know.
