As ever the fact that something is a charity and run by volunteers does not mean it is the best way to do things.

One only has to visit Lullingstone Roman Villa (English Heritage) or Dorchester Roman Town House (Council run) to see just how badly run the Roman Painted House is in terms of accessibility, advertising and even the fact that it's got the same temporary cover over it after 50 years.

Brian and the Kent Archaeological Rescue Unit did some great work half a century ago but it really is time for well meaning amateurs to step aside.

It needs proper access - ideally from the museum side opening up the wasted grass space and opening up a new connection from the Market Square to York Street.

Brian's work has been recognised and he has rightly been awarded various honours for it, but it really is about time to let his baby go for others to care for when he will no longer be with us.
