The answer's clear enough, JB: Powell had nothing to say of lasting relevance and is only remembered now because people seek out the heroes who validate their own prejudices.
As regards the 'PC' bit, are you suggesting that we shouldn't make judgments about a culture (including our own past cultures) from the perspective of our current values? If so, then you're undermining any judgment you may make about 'alien' cultures (including Islamic ones). You can't have it both ways and expect your argument to be credible.
